Armidale. A city of history, culture, educational quality and great natural beauty .

First settled in the 1830s, the present layout was planned in 1848 and in 1885 Armidale was proclaimed a city. A large number of magnificent public and private buildings stand proudly in the city and surrounding area, from the fine homesteads of wealthy grazing families to the two cathedrals beside the relaxing central park, there are grand educational buildings and classic Australian hotels. Situated in the high New England tablelands, the seasons here are more distinct than in most areas of Australia, the large number of deciduous trees lining the city streets and gardens add to the European feel for residents and visitors alike.

The collection of artworks at the New England Regional Art Museum is one of the finest in Australia outside a capital city, there are several private galleries and shops where the works of local artists and crafts people are on display and on sale. At the University of New England the fascinating Museum of Antiquities in open every weekday as is the equally interesting Zoology Museum. The University itself is the oldest regional university in Australia, it's residential students make up a significant part of the local population even though most of it's students study via distance education.

The New England area is on top of the Great Divide at an altitude of around 1000m. It is dominated by rolling hills with an occasional peak to 1500m or more and torn on the eastern side by great gorges plunging 300 to 400m down to cold clear rivers. Within a short drive are the scenic Wollomombi falls, one of Australia's highest, the haunting granite boulders of Cathedral Rocks National Park, the breathtaking view from Point Lookout over the ancient forests in the New England National Park and the wonderful rainforest experience of the skywalk in Dorrigo National Park. There are two World Heritage sites in the above National Parks and many areas of state and national significance.

On the New England Highway midway between Sydney and Brisbane, Armidale is a great stopover on your trip. There are plenty of good pubs, restuarants and traditional corner shops offering great quick take-aways. For overnight stays there are a wide range of accomodation, motels, caravan parks and a growing number of Bed and Breakfast like the Greg and Jeannie's Creature Comforts.
